Soldier for a Day

Enlist, suit up and step fully into the life of a 78th Highlander.

Two young children dressed in historic costumes, one saluting, in a room with white brick walls.

Fun for the whole family! This immersive, hands-on program invites you to go beyond the tour and fully step into history.

From the moment you ‘enlist,’ you’ll be guided through the daily routines, responsibilities and traditions of a private soldier stationed at the Halifax Citadel in the late 1800s.

Sign your enlistment papers, get fitted in full uniform (including the iconic red doublet and Mackenzie tartan kilt) and learn the fundamentals of military life. Drill with your unit, explore the fort’s ramparts and tunnels and take part in authentic activities that bring the experience to life.

Participants will also have the opportunity to fire an original Snider-Enfield rifle or learn traditional drum calls used in both duty and battle. The experience concludes with time to relax and reflect in the Citadel’s restored soldiers’ library, complete with complimentary refreshments.

“Fascinating historic site with great views and a well-preserved fort. The World War museum on the second floor is especially interesting — full of artifacts, stories and a well-done exhibition. A great piece of history and a must-visit spot to learn more about Halifax’s past while enjoying the scenery.”
