About the Halifax Citadel Society
Our Purpose
At the Halifax Citadel Society, we bring history to life in ways that help people understand what it means to be Canadian — past and present.
Through immersive experiences, visitors explore the stories of the people, communities and forces that shaped this country. From the rhythm of 19th-century military life to the broader social and political history of Halifax, we create moments that are engaging, memorable and meaningful.
We also invest in the next generation, offering young people opportunities to build confidence, leadership and a sense of service through hands-on programs.
Our goal is simple: to inspire thoughtful, informed citizens, at home and around the world.
What we do
At the heart of the Halifax Citadel Society is a commitment to making history engaging, accessible and unforgettable. Through immersive programming and on-site experiences, we help bring the story of the Citadel and the people who lived and worked here to life for visitors from around the world.
Our work includes:
Delivering daily living history programming
Operating guided tours, events and seasonal experiences
Supporting educational programs and community engagement
Enhancing the overall visitor experience across the site
Living history in action
Our signature programming centres around the re-creation of the 78th Highland Regiment of Foot and the 3rd Brigade, Royal Artillery during the mid-Victorian era.
Throughout the visitor season, the Citadel comes alive with daily activities — from the firing of the noon gun and military drill demonstrations to live music, guided tours and hands-on experiences. These programs offer a dynamic and immersive way to explore Halifax’s past.
Supporting the site
In addition to programming, we operate several on-site services that both enhance the visitor experience and support the organization’s work. These include The Regimental Shop and The Coffee Bar.
Revenue from these operations is reinvested into programming, helping to sustain and grow the Society’s impact.
A site with a story
The Halifax Citadel stands as a symbol of the city’s military past. Completed in 1856, it is the fourth fort to occupy this strategic hill overlooking Halifax Harbour — once a key defence point within the British Empire. Today, it remains a powerful reminder of the people, events and decisions that helped shape the city and the country.
Music and tradition
Music plays a central role in the Citadel experience. From the sound of pipes and drums echoing across the parade square to formal instruction opportunities, we are committed to preserving and sharing this important part of Nova Scotia’s cultural heritage.
